[Tutorial] Autostart

Post by Yadin on Thu Jan 05, 2012 7:13 pm

How to add something into the autostart list?
(this means: a programm that will be excuted after the OS has been loaded)

First of all you need to be the administrator of your computer.
Then go to this following file:

C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Now you can add there e.g. shortcuts or a batch file that is excuting some programmes.

Short and nice tutorial but I got 2 questions / got to point out some things:

  1. Are you sure that this will work on older MS os as well? Like XP? I am not sure if the folder structure is the same there.
  2. There are programs which allow you to manage start up programs on a really comfortable way. I prefere using them. There is even a program of that kind provided by Microsoft, and if you don't trust them (enough), then delete Windows.

(I know that they also collect data, but just a question: Who doesn't do that nowadays?)

@1. Question: I tried this only on MS Windows 7 but it's on other windows similar I guess.

@2. Question: Well, people are not interested in wasting resources for such programmes, it's also not hard to make this by yourself. I could explain it also in some sentences (look at 1. message).

"Wasting resources", lol. Why do you think is Windows 7 for example not a console application? Because people don't like complicated things (most of them). They want things to work, and they want to achieve a good result on the easiest possible way. That is, in my eyes, a good reason to use that programs.

Also, if you created such a program on your own, you would waste resources as well then. Today most of the computers got harddrives ranging from 300GB to some terrabytes. Installing a program which will require ~50 MB or so won't kill anyone I guess.
